Random notes
Random notes A few random notes today Mystery solved! You may remember that a while back, I posed a challenge question to you (about two thirds of the way down the linked page). I wanted to identify the cosplay roles played by two attendees of the Hong Kong Comics Festival Game Fair in one of my vacation photos. In this case, getting the right answer took two people! First, I got an email from Eric more than a week ago (to give you an idea of how behind on email I am right now). He wrote, The male character in the picture is a modification of the Masked Rider who was popular in a early 90s anime show. If you would like more information about him you can click on this link. The female character in the picture is a new character from the video game Dynasty Warriors 5 for PS2. Her name is Xing Cai and a full profile of her character is available from this website. After checking out the links, I was pretty sold on Xing Cai, but still a bit skeptical about the Masked Rider. Interestingly, around the same time, Alissa left the following comment in the blog: I think Ive discovered the identity of one of the cosplayers from this picture (if someone hasnt already said this yet). I beliieeeve the silver-armored person is Shadow Moon for Kamen Rider. See this link. I believe that solves the mystery! Thanks, Eric, for identifying Xing Cai, and thanks Alissa for identifying Shadow Moon. Also, a few entries back, I linked to some other admissions officer weblogs I knew about. Since then, Ive learned of some additional blogs, theyre worth checking out. My latest list includes (alphabetically): Assumption CollegeBryn Mawr CollegeCase Western Reserve UniversityFranklin W. Olin College of EngineeringOhio University And you can still check out all of the MIT Admissions blogs at my.mit.edu. In addition to slacking on email (in order to spend more time on reading), Ive also slacked a bit on getting the next Omnibus out. So let me answer a few recent pertinent questions here and now: Kevin asked, Referring to EA applicants, are the Mid-year grade reports necessary for the applications to be considered? No. Usually we dont see Midyear grades until January or February, after your schools first semester grades are released. Only students under consideration for regular action (RA applicants and EA deferred students) need to worry about the Midyear grade report form. Kristen wrote, Hi, Matt. I applied EA, and Ive noticed that my secondary school report and transcript havent shown up as processed yet. Is this something to look into, or is this just normal? If you are an EA applicant, and the tracking system still shows something as not processed, you should fax us copies of that application piece as soon as possible. The Records Office fax number is (617) 258-8304. Michael wrote, I have just tried to contact my EC, but recieved an email saying that my email could not be delivered to my ECs address, as his username was unknown. Therefore, I would like to ask you what you think my next course of action should be? All interview questions should be directed to [emailprotected] Theyre your best bet. Alex wrote, In your opinion, is a 780 Math Level 2 worth retaking for the 800? No, no, NO. Really, use that Saturday to have a picnic. Rebecca wrote, I know you said you would post an entry about the application reading soon, but Id really like to know if you could take us (the prospective MIT students) *inside* the processfor instance, maybe chronicle the life of a single (anonymous) application, its journey from mailing room to individual readers to committee, etc. Im just curious. Soon, very soon. Marybeth wrote, Does MIT look at any older applicants? I know it says you are required to live on campus in one of MITs 11 residence halls, so prolly discourages people who arent normal undergrad age? We do consider older applicants. We will still require a complete application: transcript, standardized tests, recommendations, etc. As for housing, I dont know the entire story, but married students and students with families do get special provisions. Lorelei wrote, i am a foreign student, and i skipped a year in highschool so i will finish highschool in 3 years. and i am sure that ive read somewhere=> do we have to get english classes for 4 years ? No. Especially considering your circumstances, fewer than four high school English courses will be fine. Ill answer more questions about getting deferred and getting denied when we actually have made some decisions. Also, Id like to thank you all for your comments. I do read every comment, and it makes me happy to see a blog community form. My best wishes to all of you! Random notes A few random notes: Thanks for all the mini-contest entries! Ill be reading them this week and posting some of them next week. Good news for Heroes fans at MIT: Masi Oka, who plays the lovable and awesome Hiro Nakamura on the NBC series Heroes, has signed on to the film 21, a movie adaptation of the book about the MIT Blackjack Team. Kevin Spacey is producing and is rumored to also be in the film. I dont know if you caught it in all the pre-deadline craziness, but a recent entry by Melis entitles Everybody Loves A Math Joke is now the most popular post ever on the MIT blogs, thanks in part to its posting on digg.com, where it received more than 2000 diggs (!). Two items from New Jersey: 1. Jun Choi 94 was elected mayor of Edison; 2. Michael Rodburg 68 has been named Chairman of the American Conference on Diversity. Ill be answering more questions hopefully next week. Finally today (as you may have read in JKims blog), the inventor of instant Ramen noodles died last week. Momofuku Ando was 96 years old. Instant noodles have become a staple of life for many college students. Piled Higher and Deeper memorialized Ando in the comic below.

Self Disclosure Through Social Penetration Theory
Decisions about self-disclosure -whether to reveal one s thoughts, feelings, or past experiences to another person, or the level of intimacy of such disclosure - are part of the everyday life of most persons (Derlega Berg, 1987, p. ix). Deciding whether or not to self-disclose with others, not only affects the type of relationships you form, but also how you are perceived by others. It goes without saying that, self-disclosure can make or break the development of close relationships. Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor, the theorists behind Social Penetration Theory understood this fact, and came up with a theory that explained self-disclosure through social penetration. Throughout this paper, I will discuss exactly what this theory is,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Altman and Taylor (1987) developed the social penetration theory to describe self-disclosure as the gradual sharing of information about oneself. Different Stages of Relational Development: Author of Close Encounters: Communication in Relationships, Laura K. Guerrero, Peter A. Anderson, and Walid A. Afifi, (2018) state that, ââ¬Å"According to this theory, as partners get closer, they move through four stages of relational developmentâ⬠(pg. 116). The first stage, called orientation, involves superficial disclosure that allows people to get to know one another in a nonthreatening manner. The second stage, called exploratory affective exchange, focuses on broadening the range of topics that people talk about so they can determine what they have in common and decide whether or not to further develop a relationship. The third stage, called affective exchange, occurs when people start to disclose information on more personal topics, such as emotions and vulnerabilities. The final state, stable exchange, occurs when people in a relationship feel free to disclose almost all of their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with one another (p. 116). These different stages progress after an initial interaction when people meet. As relationships develop, so does your self-disclosure. According to the social penetration theory, ââ¬Å"the dimensions that are most central to the process of relationship development are depth and breadthâ⬠(Afifi, Anderson, Show MoreRelatedSocial Penetration Theory : Arizona Sate University1581 Words à |à 7 Pages Social Penetration Theory Conner Farquharson Arizona Sate University For a young child, telling a secret to the person he or she likes is a big deal. The Third World Debt Crisis - 1740 Words
As of now there are many third world countries that are in debt and the one that I am going to be focusing on mostly is Africa. The third world debt crisis has to do with some of the poorest countries around the world that are in deep debts because they are not able to pay back loans that they were given to a while back. It is very hard for them to come up with the money and as time goes on little by little the amount keeps on increasing. This debt started back when first world countries had very large amounts of money and went ahead and loaned a good amount to the third world countries for development projects but now they have fallen behind in trying to keep up with their payments. In the Journal Cleaning up Third World Debt Without Getting Taken to the Cleaners it mentions the amount of debt these third world countries are in. Bulow and Rogoff write, ââ¬Å"As of mid-1989, the highly indebted Countries owed roughly $300 billion to commercial banks in government and government-guar anteed debt (p. 32).â⬠As I kept reading they talked about different assumptions they came up with, about how and what they are going to do. One assumption was how once two-thirds of their debt was forgiven by having others help out; the countries with the most debt would have to pay off the rest. Many people would agree that it is not right for the third world countries to be paying debts that they arenââ¬â¢t able to pay for. Newtons Law of Universal Gravitation free essay sample
ââ¬Å"Every point mass attracts every single other point mass by a force pointing along the line intersecting both pointsâ⬠(Newtonââ¬â¢s Law of Universal Gravitation). Have you ever taken the time to scrutinize a flower? To imagine each snowflakeââ¬â¢s pattern on a lightly dusted white ground? To ponder the purpose of placing property tags on sewage covers? To visualize the airflow around a flying soccer ball as the goalie snatches the shot? Our world is a fascinating place. Every little object has its own quirks, its own story. The humble bumble bee is a species that has respectfully ignored our conceived laws of physics to fly. Leaves are blown into the grills of Mack trucks and carried for miles. An ordinary rock could have been the beloved ââ¬Å"petâ⬠of another child, now fully grown. Every object, animate or not, has a unique story, some meaning to its existence. Often, we overlook it. We will write a custom essay sample on Newtons Law of Universal Gravitation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Nothing ceases to amaze me. The beauty of the unconventional is captivating. I could spend hours lying on the hammock admiring the carpet of monocots below, spend days gawking at the animated story of the y=x3 polynomiograph, or spend nights gazing at the swirling balls of gas that exist millions of light-years away. But I wasnââ¬â¢t always cognizant of such natural happenings. Ballet has always been my passion, my favorite activity, but it is not solely the beauty and grace that make it so; it is the deception that is truly enchanting. A ballerinaââ¬â¢s life is not only physically demanding and emotionally trying, but also therapeutic. Ballet destroys joints and leaves you with bloody, deformed feet; the feeling of dancing, however, is like no other. Reality fades away as you silently thunder to the floor after a high jump and feel the roaring silence of the crowd consume you, or maybe reality vanishes as you piquee down ShopRite aisles. But, no matter the situation, you simply dance. My affinity for ballet is simply higher than my affinity for any other activity. Ballet veiled me in discipline at a young age. Perhaps it bred my passion for learning or questioning the odd. Or perhaps it became an addiction nonetheless it consumed my world. Who would have thought a bloody band-aid could be so beautiful? It is the tangible proof of an effort filled rehearsal, a sign of never backing down, a symbol of true beauty. The demanding and time consuming nature of ballet made experiencing anything else rare. Sir Isaac Newtonââ¬â¢s Law of Universal Gravitation provides the hard scientific theory to parallel the philosophy of my interests. Everything invokes me, though some ideas or objects may provide a stronger attractive force. Only upon separation from the defining aspects of my life may I experience the rest of my world, the attraction of the smaller pieces. After being physically removed from the activity I so craved, ballet, my eyes were opened to a new realm of possibilities by a curiosity that allots freedom like no other, opening the world of unseen and un-experienced phenomena. I have now realized the natural enthusiasm I have for everything, whether that ââ¬Å"thingâ⬠is a passion or an institution of higher education.

The character of Mama in the short story ââ¬Å"Everyday Useâ⬠by Alice Walker, is a survivalist. She sees and tells of how things are, no glitz or glamour, just the hard plain truth about herself and her family surviving. This is pretty much the life that she has led. Self-described as ââ¬Å"â⬠¦a large, big-boned, woman with rough, man-working hands.â⬠Mama shows a no nonsense, hit you in the face, truth about herself and her daughters. Growing up poor, Mama had to work hard to raise her family. There is mention of the girlsââ¬â¢ daddy, but the story does not elaborate on him. I cannot be certain of the roll in which he played in the raising of the family. She described how she could kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man could, worked outside in the bitter cold, breaking ice for water for washing, and even went on to explain how she killed a bull calf with a sledge hammer and had the meat hung before nightfall. Not a lot of men, even fewer women, would be able to perform such a task. Being black in the early and mid 1900ââ¬â¢s, Mama grew up with a sense for survival. She never looked a strange white man in the eye nor did she ever talk straight to them. Always taking the defensive posture for flight. She seemed to avoid any conflict of any type, mostly because the black would be seen as being in the wrong. This non-combativeness holds true when Dee arrives and announces that her name is no longer Dee, but Wangero. Mama puts up little fight about a family name that has been passed through the generations. She avoided conflict. Mama enjoys the simplistic things in life. Early and at the end of the story, she describes how just sitting in the front yard, although hers is clay and sand, can pass the day away as though she was in her living room. Throughout the entire story, Mama pretty much acts like a pacifist. Never wanting to start any trouble or put her foot down about anything. Dee (Wangero) came home and started ... In this article, I'll list the colleges with the lowest 25th percentile SAT scores for their admitted students. The 25th percentile SAT score means that 25% of admitted students to that university scored at or below that number; the 75th percentile SAT score means that 75% of admitted students scored at or below that score (25% scored higher).I'll also explainwhy their low SAT criterion doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean the university is bad. Schools Listed in Ascending Order of 25th/75th Percentile with Admission Rate I compiled this comprehensive list through online research. I chose to list it in ascending order by 25th percentile score (rather than the 75th percentile score) so that you could see the lowest scores allowed for admission to these universities. Is It a Bad Thing? There are many reasons these schools may have lower SAT score requirements. Many of the schools on this list are specialty schools, such as religious or art schools. These specialty schools often prioritize other admission criteria, such as artistic talent or religious faith, over the SAT. For example, Trinity College Florida says, "We seek applications from students who are personally committed to Jesus Christ and express a desire to study in a Christian college environment. Prospective students should show potential for academic success and evidence of outstanding Christian character." In a particularly unique example, Gallaudet University prioritizes the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students, although select hearing students who know ASL may be admitted. You may notice that a lot of these schools have a large gap between the 25th to 75th percentile (some nearly as wide as 400 points).Students with scores near the 25th percentile may be admitted for special reasons such as being the child of a significant donor, a legacy, an athlete, or an exceptional talent (such as a world-class pianist). Another possible explanation for the wide range of scores isthat since most of these schools have such high admissions rate, they need to accept a wider range of students to fill up their classes. Some of these schools take almost every student who applies and, thus, have wider ranges of scores. It's not necessarily a bad thing that these schools have lower SAT requirements. It may simply mean that the school is prioritizing other admissions criteria or that the school is opening their school to a wider range of students. A lot of other colleges, including prestigious schools like Bryn Mawr, Wake Forest, and George Washington University, are no longer requiring the SAT for admission. This decision doesn't mean that these aren't excellent colleges; they just no longer think the SAT is the best criteria for admission to their university. However, some of the schools on the list above are not veryacademically rigorous. If you're looking for an intellectually challenging school, you may want to look elsewhere. Even worse, there are schools out there that simply exist to make money, and innocent students end up stuck with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. While for-profit schools are usually the worst offenders, some non-profits also have lower education quality and leave students with few job prospects after graduation. Be wary and do your research when considering where to apply to college. When selecting colleges to apply to, you should instead consider whether the college is your best fit, asking questions such as: Does it have the major you want to pursue? Have students in your major ended up with careers in their chosen field? Is it in a big or small town? What is the student body size?
